(ConservativePeak.Com) – After the new coronavirus strain COVID-19 spread from China, and a shortage of medical equipment manufactured in China caused chaos across the United States, the president took to the podium in the White House briefing room on Tuesday to call on the nation’s politicians to back his new independence agenda.
President Donald Trump described the “critical” need for America to regain its independence in sectors like manufacturing and even the energy sector. Trump explained how the United States cannot be reliant on another country for key resources that ensure the nation’s survival.
Speaking to an audience of journalists, Trump said, “We should never be reliant on a foreign country for the means of our own survival. I think we’ve learned a lot.”
The president’s comments echo the same concerns he set out during his original 2016 campaign, but which have since fallen victim to constant legislative battles with Congressional Democrats.
“This crisis has underscored just how critical it is to have strong borders and a robust manufacturing sector. For three years, we’ve embarked on a great national project to secure our immigration system and bring back our manufacturing jobs. We’ve brought back many jobs, record numbers of jobs, and this really shows, this experience shows how important borders are,” Trump said. “Without borders, you don’t have a nation.”
Even though the statement is true, and something most politicians will surely agree with at this stage, the tone is unlikely to be attractive to Congressional Democrats who have done nothing but attack the president and attempt to derail his America First agenda since the day he took office.
Even in the face of the coronavirus, and the huge disruption to our medical system caused by a lack of medical equipment usually sourced from China, it’s unlikely the Democrats will admit they are wrong.
The president said his new agenda for fighting the coronavirus and bringing independence to the United States was about uniting the country.
“Our goal for the future must be to have American medicine for American patients, American supplies for American hospitals, and American equipment for our great American heroes,” he said. “Now both parties must unite to ensure America is truly an independent nation in every sense of the word.”
Well, given the Democrats are already refusing to unite and shot down the bipartisan relief bill on Sunday and Monday, it looks like the president will need to make congressional gains in the November election to implement his new agenda.
