Border Patrol Arrests Woman Over Ricin Sent To White House

( Reports suggest a woman has been detained by Customs and Border Patrol agents while attempting to cross into New York over the Canadian border. It follows the discovery of a letter containing a white substance – later confirmed to be the poisonous biological agent ricin – in a mail screening facility near the White House.

The announcement was made on Sunday afternoon that the woman is a Canadian citizen who was deported from the United States in 2019 for engaging in criminal activity and overstaying her visa.

The woman was carrying a weapon at the time she was arrested and is believed to be connected to the attempt at sending the poisonous agent to the White House. Ricin is fatal in small doses when inhaled or ingested, meaning that if President Donald Trump had opened the envelope that was addressed to him then he likely would have died.

CNN cited a source “familiar with the matter,” and reported that the envelope had been mailed to the White House from Quebec, Canada. The outlet also says that the woman is now expected to face charges in the United States for allegedly sending it.

This isn’t the first time that ricin has been used to target politicians. In 2018, a Navy veteran was arrested after he confessed to sending enveloped filled with ricin to President Donald Trump and other government officials. As with the latest case, the letters were intercepted before they reached the White House.

Sending dangerous substances and even explosives to public officials seems to be something that crosses party lines, too. A man from Mississippi was sentenced to 25 years in prison after he sent ricin-dusted letters to then-President Barack Obama.

CNN reported that the FBI’s Washington field office confirmed that they, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and U.S. Secret Service were “investigating a suspicious letter received at a U.S. government mail facility” and that there is “no known threat to public safety” at this time.

The report also said that authorities are investigating similar packages that had been mailed to some Texas addresses, with those authorities believing that they may be connected to the Canadian sender.

“We are aware of the concerning reports of packages containing ricin directed toward US federal government sites,” a spokeswoman for Canada’s Minister of Public Safety said over the weekend.

All mail directed to the White House is screened offsite before entering the building…because of people doing things just like this.
