(ConservativePeak.com)- Dr. Deborah Birx, one of the most high-profile representatives of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, told CNN last week that the Chinese coronavirus pandemic is entering a new phase. Dr. Birx said that COVID-19 is now hitting almost everywhere in the United States and is vastly more widespread.
CNN host Dana Bash asked Dr. Birx if the United States is in a “new phase of the pandemic” and, if so, what she will do to “change course.”
It was kind of a loaded question, but Birx answered it and described that the virus is now more widespread than it was even just weeks ago.
“I think those are two very critical questions because we are in a new phase,” she said. “And that’s why I really wanted to make it clear to the American people.”
Dr. Brix said that responses to the virus now need to be “dramatically tailored” to the specific areas where outbreaks are occurring. It’s exactly the kind of thing Republicans were advocating for at the beginning of the pandemic when may places that weren’t affected badly by the virus were being forced to go into full lockdown.
“But I want to be very clear,” Dr. Birx added. “What we’re seeing today is different from March and April. It is extraordinarily widespread. It’s into the rural as equal urban areas. And to everybody who lives in a rural area, you are not immune or protected from this virus. And that’s why we keep saying, no matter where you live in America, you need to wear a mask and socially distance, do the personal hygiene pieces.”
It’s a message that President Donald Trump is also embracing in the run-up to the November election, and a message that seems to be helping him. After being seen in public wearing a mask (and a cool one with a Presidential seal on it!) and embracing the social distancing measures, President Trump’s popularity has skyrocketed. A recent poll commissioned by the Sunday Express shows Trump with a clear lead over presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden nationally and in key swing states too.
Dr. Birx stressed the importance for people who live in multigenerational households to consider wearing a mask at home. This is a message that many people may see as too intrusive, but it doesn’t apply to anybody. The advice simply means that if you live with people who are older or vulnerable and there is no way of separating your living quarters, then wearing a mask at home may even help.
“This epidemic right now is different, and it’s wide, it’s more widespread,” she said. “And it’s both rural and urban.”
