Joe Biden Proposes Ambitious, Expensive Clean Energy Plan

( Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden unveiled a clean energy plan that would cost $2 trillion over four years.

At a speaking event in Wilmington, Delaware, Biden announced his plan that he said would create economic opportunities while also strengthening infrastructure. It would increase clean energy usage in the building, electricity and transportation sectors.

Biden labeled his plan “the largest mobilization of public investment since World War II.”

The goal of the plan is to cut America’s overall carbon footprint by 50% by 2035. The ultimate goal, though, is to have a fully “clean energy economy,” one that has net-zero emissions, by 2050.

One of the ways it will do so is by upgrading roughly 4 million buildings throughout the country over these four years so they meet elite energy-efficiency standards. In a tweet that announced his plans, he called out the president for his approach to climate change:

“When Donald Trump thinks about climate change, all he can muster is one word: ‘hoax.’ When I think about climate change, I think of a word as well: ‘jobs.’ Good-paying, union jobs that put Americans to work.”

In his speech on Tuesday, Biden emphasized how important it is to re-build the crumbling infrastructure across the country. He said:

“These aren’t pie-in-the-sky dreams. These are actionable policies that we can get to work on right away. We can live up to our responsibilities, meet the challenges of a world at risk of a climate catastrophe, build more climate resilient communities, put millions of skilled workers on the job, and make life markedly better and safer for the American people all at once and benefit the world in the process.”

Trump’s campaign fired back at Biden. Hogan Gidley, Trump’s campaign national press secretary, called the plan “more like a socialist manifesto that promises to massively raise taxes, eliminate jobs in the coal, oil and natural gas industries, and crush the middle class.”

Biden disputed that claim in his speech, saying:

“We can create millions of high-paying union jobs by building a modern infrastructure and a clean energy future. These are the most critical investments we can make for the long-term health and vitality of both the American economy and the physical health and safety of the American people.”

Biden said Trump and the GOP as a whole are instead pushing “backward-looking policies that will harm the environment, make communities less healthy, hold back economic promise.”

He even took direct aim at Trump, telling him to “quit pushing the false choice between protecting our health and protecting our economy. All it does is endanger our recovery on both fronts.”

Gidley, though, took a different view of Biden’s plan:

“It’s clear that Biden is beholden to the radical socialist ideology of Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.” He said Biden is “pushing extreme policies that would smother the economy just when it’s showing signs of roaring back.”

Andrew Clark, the rapid response director for Trump’s 2020 campaign, also tweeted:

“Joe Biden could act NOW to stop his supporters from trying to kill these good-paying union pipeline jobs. Instead, he’s preparing to sacrifice them on the altar of the Green New Deal.”
