Top Democrat Calls For “Truth Commission” To Be Ran By Government

( Yet another liberal member of the House of Representatives is calling for the government to create a “truth commission” that would battle extremism in America.

Appearing on a CNN show on Sunday, California Representative Sara Jacobs criticized “conflict entrepreneurs” who “take existing fault lines in our society” and “mobilize around them, using the enabling environment of our media ecosystem and our lack of trust” in various institutions.

The week before that interview, Jacobs had said a “truth commission” needs to be created to deal with extremism that is rooted in the racist past of America. The host of Sunday’s CNN program, Brian Stelter, brought that up to her in the interview, and asked her to expand on what she meant.

Jacobs responded:

“Part of what we’re seeing now is because we haven’t really done the reckoning with the racial injustice and white supremacy of our past that we need to do. “A truth commission, a lot of people will think of South Africa … It’s communities all the way up to the national level having conversations about both the glory and the glory of our history and what happened, both throughout the history of our country and leading up to and on January 6, so that we can come to a common narrative, moving forward, of what we want our country to be.”

Stelter then asked whether Jacobs believed that leadership in Congress had “the stomach” for creating a commission like that. She responded:

“I think so. Look, we all were victims of this attack in addition to being the lawmakers of this country. This is very personal … I think there are a lot of us who know that this impeachment trial was just the start of holding Donald Trump accountable.”

At 32 years old, Jones is one of the youngest members of the House. She was elected to represent California residents last November.

This isn’t an original idea that Jacobs is pushing. Back in October, Robert Reich, who served as Secretary of Labor under former President Bill Clinton, tweeted:

“When this nightmare is over, we need a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. It would erase Trump’s lies, comfort those who have been harmed by his hatefulness, and name every official, politician, executive, and media mogul whose greed and cowardice enabled this catastrophe.”

Ultra-progressive Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York made similar comments following the attack on the U.S. Capitol building on January 6. On an live stream on Instagram, AOC said:

“I can say, there is absolutely a commission being discussed, but it seems to be more investigatory in style rather than truth and reconciliation. So, I think that’s an interesting concept for us to explore, and I do think that several members of Congress, in some of my discussions, have brought up media literacy because that is part of what happened here, and we’re going to have to figure out how we rein in our media environment so that you can’t just spew disinformation and misinformation.”
