Trump Admin to Send Federal Officers to Fight Crime in Detroit, Milwaukee, and Cleveland

( President Donald Trump is following through on his promise to protect the American people. As Democrat-run cities descend into chaos through left-wing protests and rising murder rates, federal officers will be sent in to help as part of Operation Legend.

Under Operation Legend, federal law enforcement agencies work with local law enforcement officers to fight rapidly rising violent crime. Chicago has been one of the most notable instances of rapidly rising crime, seeing murders in the city rise while Mayor Lori Lightfoot blames it on neighboring states and their less restrictive gun laws.

On Wednesday, the expansion of the program was announced by the Department of Justice. An official released explained that Detroit, Cleveland, and Milwaukee will be the latest cities to receive federal assistance.

“Operation Legend is a sustained, systemic and coordinated law enforcement initiative in which federal law enforcement agencies work in conjunction with state and local law enforcement officials to fight violent crime,” the release explains.”

Attorney General William Barr said that the “most basic responsibility” of the federal government is to “protect the safety of our citizens.”

“Today, we have extended Operation Legend to Cleveland, Detroit, and Milwaukee, three cities that have seen disturbing increases in violent crime, particularly homicides.”

Barr said that for many decades the Department of Justice has been able to successfully drive down crime when utilizing their anti-violent crime task forces and federal law enforcement agents in cities experiencing increases in violent crime.

“The Department of Justice’s assets will supplement local law enforcement efforts, as we work together to take the shooters and chronic violent criminals off our streets,” he added.

Democrats are likely to object to the move. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi already called federal officers “stormtroopers” in a tweet earlier in July. Other Democratic lawmakers have repeatedly slammed the president for making use of federal officers, without putting forward alternatives to help drive down violent crime.

As part of the expansion of the program, the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, ATF and DEA will be directed to “significantly increase resources” in the three cities in the coming weeks.
